Decorative rain chains originated in Japan, where they were called kusari-doi. They are still used today to keep water runoff away from the roofs of both homes and religious temples. Like many items that hail from Japan, rain chains are a perfect mix of functionality and beauty.
Rain chains are meant to be showcased, not camouflaged and can be simple or ornate; classic or themed. Rain chains are understated but charming whilst enhancing the beauty of other garden decor like stone statues or outdoor chimes.
Gutter downspouts are industrial by default so it should be no surprise that they can sound clunky and unnatural when rain is rushing down them. On the other hand, rain chains were specifically designed to create beautiful sounds when rain falls.
Rain chains are a beautiful architectural feature which direct water from your guttering into a waterbutt, flowerbeds, or any other water features. Typically made of copper, brass, or even stainless steel, rain chains divert rainwater from roof level to the ground in a controlled manner, in much the same way as a traditional downpipe would. A rain chain would usually connect to the nozzle outlet or drop end section of your guttering and will provide the beauty of cascading water while diverting it away from your home. As such, we recommend you ensure that any water flowing from a rain chain is directed away from the foundation of your home. Whilst there is no limit on how many rain chains you can have, we would not recommend that you replace all of your downpipes with rain chains and some splashing will occur just by the nature of water colliding with the chains.
